Keeping Track of Gun Violence

A number of websites, both new and old, are keeping track of gun violence in the United States.  

@GunDeaths@GunDeaths is using crowdsourcing to keep track of gun deaths since Dec. 14. 

The Gun Crisis Reporting Project is a nonprofit journalism organization illuminating gunfire in Philadelphia. 

►  Shootings in Boston reports on gun violence in Boston since the 2013 Boston Marathon.

The Gun Report and Another Day in the (Gun Crazy) U.S.A. grab examples of gun violence from the week's news.

Mikeb302000 and Stop the NRA  In addition to reporting gun violence incidents these websites also look at the politics around guns.

Concealed Carry Killers reports on non-self defense killings by private citizens legally allowed to carry a concealed handgun.

Kid Shootings highlights any and all timely cases of minors, ages 17 and under, who are involved in gun crimes or dangerous situations involving guns.

Ohh Shoot highlights unintentional shootings.

Walmart Shootings highlights cases of shootings and other gun-related crimes on Walmart property.

President Obama announced two new executive actions to keep the most dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands and ban re-imports of military surplus firearms.

► The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld the state's new open carry gun law.  While the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the 2009 Montana Firearms Freedom Act. The law attempts to declare that federal firearms regulations don't apply to guns made and kept in that state.

► New Republic, Colorado local election could determine the future of gun control. Why Michael Bloomberg has gone all-in on a Colorado race.

Antoinette TuffAntoinette Tuff hailed as 'true hero' for handling Georgia school gunman.  Tuff talked gunman Michael Hill into surrendering after he entered the school and started shooting.

A Texas man waltzed through the gun show loophole and bought dozens of Mexico-bound assault rifles. Instead of facing criminal charges, Luis Romano has been charged with a civil forfeiture lawsuit of dealing guns without a license.

American Journal of Epidemiology, Firearms and Suicide in the U.S.: Is Risk Independent of Underlying Suicidal Behavior?, Matthew Miller et al.  Our results support the hypothesis that firearms in the home impose suicide risk above and beyond the baseline risk.

What the Gun Lobby is Doing

Men with rifles charged in 'open carry' demonstration at Starbucks. While Texas law allows for the open carrying of unloaded weapons, the gun holder can be charged with disorderly conduct if anyone feels threatened. 

Joe Arpaio to Militias: Beware or Be Shot. A member of the Arizona Minuteman border-watch movement was arrested after pointing a rifle at a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy he apparently mistook for a drug smuggler.

How the NRA Built A Massive Secret Database of Gun Owners. While the NRA publicly fights against a national gun registry, they have gone to incredible lengths to compile information on "tens of millions" of gun owners - without their consent.
