A number of websites, both new and old, are keeping track of gun violence in the United States. ► ► The Gun Crisis Reporting Project is a nonprofit journalism organization illuminating gunfire in Philadelphia. ► Shootings in Boston reports on gun violence in Boston since the 2013 Boston Marathon. ► The Gun Report and Another Day in the (Gun Crazy) U.S.A. grab examples of gun violence from the week's news. ► Mikeb302000 and Stop the NRA In addition to reporting gun violence incidents these websites also look at the politics around guns. ► Concealed Carry Killers reports on non-self defense killings by private citizens legally allowed to carry a concealed handgun. ► Kid Shootings highlights any and all timely cases of minors, ages 17 and under, who are involved in gun crimes or dangerous situations involving guns. ► Ohh Shoot highlights unintentional shootings. ► Walmart Shootings highlights cases of shootings and other gun-related crimes on Walmart property. If you know of similar websites not on this list, please send them to our attention at info@supgv.org
►President Obama announced two new executive actions to keep the most dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands and ban re-imports of military surplus firearms. ► The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld the state's new open carry gun law. While the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the 2009 Montana Firearms Freedom Act. Why Michael Bloomberg has gone all-in on a Colorado race. ► ► A Texas man waltzed through the gun show loophole and bought dozens of Mexico-bound assault rifles. Instead of facing criminal charges, Luis Romano has been charged with a civil forfeiture lawsuit of dealing guns without a license. ► American Journal of Epidemiology, Firearms and Suicide in the U.S.: Is Risk Independent of Underlying Suicidal Behavior?, Matthew Miller et al. Our results support the hypothesis that firearms in the home impose suicide risk above and beyond the baseline risk.
► ► The Maddow Blog, The rights seizes on Christopher Lane's killing. Looks at the tragic shooting of the Australian student and how it has been misrepresented in the conservative media. ► Tom Dart, Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois, A Way Forward on Preventing Gun Violence. Looks at the issue of people who have had their gun privileges revoked yet have failed to turn in their guns and ammunition. ► Adam Winkler, UCLA law professor, Justice Scalia Goes Gun Crazy. In a recent speech Justice Scalia said that the Second Amendment was in part the right to revolt against tyranny. That's just a plain wrong and dangerous view. ► John Lennon, The Atlantic, A Convicted Murderer's Case for Gun Control. I got my first gun at 14. I had no business with that gun. Yet making guns accessible to troubled souls is business as usual in America. ►
► Men with rifles charged in 'open carry' demonstration at Starbucks. While Texas law allows for the open carrying of unloaded weapons, the gun holder can be charged with disorderly conduct if anyone feels threatened. ► Joe Arpaio to Militias: Beware or Be Shot. A member of the Arizona Minuteman border-watch movement was arrested after pointing a rifle at a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy he apparently mistook for a drug smuggler. ►How the NRA Built A Massive Secret Database of Gun Owners. While the NRA publicly fights against a national gun registry, they have gone to incredible lengths to compile information on "tens of millions" of gun owners - without their consent. |
► Moms Demand Action, Start the School Year with Gun Sense by supporting businesses that support a safe shopping environment. ► Washington Ceasefire's Ralph Fascitelli Blasts Murray on Gun Control. Fascitelli accused Murray of "putting politics over public safety" when Murray criticized initiatives of his political rival that are designed to increase public engagement on gun control issues.
► Singer Tony Bennett performed at the March on Washington "Realize the Dream" rally as part of the new Brady Campaign initiative Voices Against Violence. ► New Yorkers Against Gun Violence rally in Staten Island to call on Rep. Michael Grimm to support federal background checks on private gun sales.
Hubert Allen , of Lake Butler, Florida was once described as the right-hand man of his former boss, Marvin Pritchett. But last week, 72-year-old Allen shot and killed 80-year-old Pritchett. He also killed a former co-worker, Roland Gonzalez-Delgado, 28 and injured two others before returning home and killing himself. Police said Allen left a note showing that this was a premeditated event, targeting these individuals. The note did not reveal a motive. Allen is the step-grandfather of Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller. Spiller has been excused from the team to be with his family in Florida. |
